The SOC Shop Facility
Steam Operations Corporation typically delivers services at the customer site. However, some projects better managed at our shop facility, housed at the the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC.
The museum is comprised of 4 exhibit buildings on 58 acres, and was once Southern Railway's largest steam locomotive servicing facility. The Spencer Shops includes a 37 stall roundhouse and spacious backshop.
The roundhouse is the the largest remaining structure of its kind in the United States, and is equipped with a overhead crane, drop table, and fully functioning machine shop. The facility hosted the restoration of N&W J 611, and continues to serve as the famous locomotive's interim berth.
